A Heart for the Weary

Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30

Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV) "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. {29} "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. {30} "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Galatians 6:9 (NKJV) And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

Introduction

Seldom do I address a holiday in selecting a topic for a sermon; however I felt God wanted me to give some perspective to Labor Day.

I. Why we work so hard

A. We are in a quest for security

James 4:14 (NKJV) whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

B. We are in a quest for stability

Hebrews 1:11 (NKJV) They will perish, but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment;

C. We are in a quest for recognition

II. When it appears our work has accomplished nothing

Ecclesiastes 2:11, 17 (NKJV) Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun. {17} Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

A. The list of Solomon's quest

1. Wisdom and knowledge 5. Wealth

2. Pleasure 6. Art

3. Substance abuse 7. Fame

4. Works

B. His weariness after all he had done

Ecclesiastes 2:20 (NKJV) Therefore I turned my heart and despaired of all the labor in which I had toiled under the sun.

C. His conclusion at the end

Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NKJV) Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all.

III. Finding our fulfillment in Him

Ecclesiastes 2:26 (NIV) To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand over to the one who pleases God.

Isaiah 28:11-12 (NKJV) For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, {12} To whom He said, "This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest," And, "This is the refreshing"; Yet they would not hear.

A. The Lord says, "Come to Me"

1. For security

2 Timothy 1:12 (NKJV) For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.

2. For rest

3. For fulfillment

B. Allowing Him to give you rest

Psalms 37:4-7a (NKJV) Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. {5} Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. {6} He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday. {7} Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

1. Delight in Him

2. Commit to Him

  1. Trust in Him

4. Rest in Him
